Amia exists as the ‘little secret’ of the Steelcase portfolio. Designed by the Steelcase Design Studio in collaboration with Thomas Overthun of IDEO, Amia’s design poses the question: “How do you provide the remarkable comfort of chairs like Leap, while quieting down some of the visual expressions of LiveBack through a refined visual design?”
Since its launch, Amia has been beloved by users across contract and residential markets alike – serving as a cornerstone of design community’s palette, Amia’s four unique back expressions help it find its home from residential settings to nursing stations and everywhere in between.
What you don’t see is what makes Amia special. Under its subdued styling – Amia’s comfort comes from a two-part system: leveraging Steelcase-exclusive LiveBack technology to offer dynamic lumbar energy that moves with the user, and Adaptive Bolstering across the seat cushion – helping ensure that no matter the task at hand, users are able to find exceptional long-term comfort.
But it’s more than just a chair to us; as creators we know that each decision of the materials that go into our products is critical – it’s the reason that over 95% of each and every Steelcase Task Chair is designed, engineered, and manufactured by our teams across the world. When we responsibly select advanced materials by ensuring they minimize their impact upon extraction yet still hold up in the world’s most brutal environments, while also supporting the greatest range of user shapes and sizes – we ultimately do our part to help the world Work Better.
Steelcase has doubled the recycled content across our task seating portfolio – including Gesture, Leap, Amia, Think, Karman, Series 1 and Series 2 – contributing 3% toward our commitment to a net-zero future by 2050. By incorporating recycled materials like plastic water bottles and carpet scraps, we’re not only reducing our environmental footprint but also helping to strengthen recycling infrastructure in the communities we serve. Every task chair we ship in the Americas now includes higher recycled content. This isn’t a special “planet-friendly offering, nor does it come at an extra cost for our customers. Sustainability isn’t a premium feature – it’s a standard we’re committed to delivering across the board. Given the scale at which we manufacture task seating, it represented one of our largest opportunities for impact. This is just a starting point. By continuing to invest in recycled materials, we’re building a roadmap for future innovation by advancing material circularity across our entire portfolio and accelerating our progress toward our net-zero goal.
