Elise Shapiro is a contributing editor. Little did she know that her first job, in the facilities department at Ralston Purina, while obtaining her M. Arch at Washington University, in St. Louis would foreshadow where her career would lead. She has always been a strong advocate for providing the best possible spaces for people to work – where aesthetics meet function and drive business success.

As many of us are currently having to reexamine the layout of future workspaces, Decca Contract has delivered a great product, just in time!

Designed to reduce extraneous noise and distractions in an open work area, FrameWork™ encourages a time to focus. It also encourages a healthy workplace. Define space and enhance workflow in way that allows people to feel engaged, comfortable, and productive with FrameWork.

The FrameWork environment works well in a socially distant environment

What impact do you think this product will have on current initiatives for workplace design?

We think this product helps redefine furniture and workspaces, the FrameWork™ dual sided freestanding structure allows a variety of components to create head down focus spaces on one side and collaborative, or flex spaces, on the other. FrameWork provides a diverse offering of workplace solutions.

Does FrameWork™ support agile and activity – based workplaces that are becoming so prevalent in new facilities and those that may need to be refurbished to meet health/safety requirements for the post pandemic workplace? If so, how?

Yes. The design of the FrameWork freestanding double sided structure offers rhythmic bays that can be configured to multiple types of work settings. Be it focus space, collaborative space, flex space, or shared space, they are all achieved by simply specifying the corresponding insert option on each side.

Can you tell a story or give an example of how this product or service will help our readers design and implement great workplace solutions?

“Driven by the growing need for spatial definition in the open office, the central idea behind FrameWork was to use furniture as architecture, thus creating spaces within spaces in a simple and straight forward way.”

With offices leaning toward open working environments, the need for private workspaces has been created, the time to focus is a necessity. The FrameWork’s semi-private workspaces allows for the creation of ‘zones’, helping to define space in a productive compact footprint. It is designed to reduce extraneous distractions and give people comfortable, areas to work and collaborate. FrameWork enhances workflow by supporting diverse modern office tasks in a way that allows people to feel healthy, engaged, comfortable and productive.

We were able to get some additional background on the design and development of FrameWork™ from product designer, Brian Graham.

What was the inspiration for this design of this product?

We wanted to have a solution that helped solve the requirement for privacy in an open office environment. The need to have focus time, while maintaining social distance and get things done. We also wanted to create a way to help manage distractions that can be problematic in more open offices and create a multipurpose workspace without the need for private enclosed offices. The use of the many FrameWork configuration options will allow end users to provide productive work areas.

What innovations in use of materials or fabrication are utilized in the manufacture of this product?

Key design elements and finishes include a natural wood frame, Corian work surface options, sit-to-stand desk-top option, integrated task, and ambient lighting that the user can control, integrated power for powering electronic devices and fabric tack boards to absorb sound. Other features are glass marker boards and storage options, which allow the end user to work in the way that serves them well throughout the day.

Where do you think the installation of this product will be most effective?

We think this product line will work well in open plan workspaces and shared offices, especially with consideration of the requirement to allow more space and separation between people as offices are retrofitted post pandemic.

A year from now what would be the most exciting thing you could think of that would find out about how the product has been accepted, specified, and installed in projects?

We would be proud to know that FrameWork contributed to increased workplace productivity while creating a feeling of working in a healthy workplace.

In order to demonstrate the flexibility of FrameWork, here are a few of the many options which allow the end user to configure the set up to meet their individual needs.

The office can be organized to meet multiple needs depending on the type of work that needs to be done.

A dual-sided structure with the ability to mix and match components, FrameWork redefines space allowing configurations to be specified as a head’s down focus space on one side and/or shared space fostering collaboration on the other. Drawing upon the inherent warmth of wood, its elegant profile provides a sense of privacy within the open office, while the status of the walnut or ash wood frame instills a sense of hierarchy, prestige with a visual and tactile richness that engages and energize people at work.

It is easy to create work zones that support the social distancing that is going to be necessary for the near future.
